Luminex Announces New Mainframe Developer Platform for FICON
Platform Opens the FICON Marketplace to OEMs and ISVs
RIVERSIDE, CA—June 6, 2006—Luminex Software, Inc., announced today the first of its kind mainframe developer platform for FICON. The developer platform is available through Luminex and incorporates Luminex’s FICON driver and mainframe control unit software development kit leveraging industry-standard Emulex® LightPulse® Fibre Channel HBA products. The Emulex HBAs are available in many formats including single- and dual-channel, along with RoHS compliant PCI-X and PCI Express form factors.
The FICON-based platform vastly reduces the level of effort to develop and deploy mainframe channel attached solutions. Existing Luminex and non-Luminex ISVs and OEMs will find it easy and straight-forward to port their storage and networking products to the Luminex platform. New software developers can now enter the mainframe market due to a unique architecture that shields the developer from the complexity of the mainframe channel and control unit architecture. Using the platform, time to market for new or enhanced mainframe attached storage and networking products will be significantly reduced.
Luminex’s software development kit includes comprehensive APIs that fully abstract both the FICON and ESCON channel protocols, enabling software developers to concentrate on the unique functionality and value of their storage and networking applications. Developers can choose to integrate at the HBA level using the Luminex Universal Channel Interface Driver API or at the control unit level using Luminex’s Control Unit API. Regardless, the developer platform is designed to enable mainframe-attached storage and networking applications to operate at channel speed.
Currently available on Solaris, the Luminex FICON developer platform will be available on Linux, Windows and other custom OEM operating systems later in 2006.
“Our FICON developer platform is a direct move away from proprietary solutions,” said Michael Saunders, president of Luminex. “Our strategic vision is to open the mainframe market to the same competitive forces that are successfully driving the open systems marketplace. We recognize that competition is good for the market and that opening the FICON market to ISVs and OEMs can only result in a stronger and more competitive array of product offerings for the mainframe customer. We anticipate a flood of innovative, feature rich and cost-effective mainframe storage solutions to hit the market.”
The Emulex family of 4 Gbs Fibre Channel HBA products are a core element of the FICON developer platform. Luminex designed, built and certified a high performance FICON software platform based on the Emulex 4 Gb/s LP11000 and LPe11000 family of Fibre Channel SAN Connectivity solutions.
“We’re pleased Luminex is leveraging the Emulex family of HBAs to enable a robust development platform based on FICON for use in Solaris operating environments,” said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing at Emulex. “With the ongoing deployment of enterprise-class mainframe solutions, the inherently flexible Emulex HBA architecture - which is broadly deployed within Solaris-based systems - provides the industry’s leading platform for developers interested in leveraging FICON-based solutions.”
