Luminex Announces RoHS-Compliant FICON & ESCON HBA’s Becomes the First RoHS-Compliant FICON & ESCON Board-Level Supplier!

RoHS-Compliant FICON & ESCON

RIVERSIDE, CA—June 29, 2006—Luminex Software, Inc., announced today that as of July 1, 2006 RoHS compliant versions of its ESCON and FICON host bus adapters are now available. The RoHS versions of the products comply with the European Union Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2002/95/EC). The Directive goes into effect on July 1, 2006. With this announcement, Luminex becomes the first company worldwide to announce and deliver a full lineup of RoHS certified ESCON and FICON HBAs.

Luminex’s ESCON product family is based on its 64-bit PCI-based ESCON HBAs and the FICON product family is based on PCI, PCI-X and PCI-Express 4Gb/sec fibre channel products from Emulex. Now, all products based on Luminex’s mainframe channel connectivity HBAs can be certified RoHS compliant!

“RoHS is an important global initiative that will profoundly impact current and future generations,” said Michael Saunders, president of Luminex. “We are proud to take a leadership role in the development and release of RoHS-compliant mainframe channel connectivity products. We look forward to working with an increasing number of mainframe-focused OEM suppliers as they convert their legacy ESCON and FICON products to comply with the RoHS directive, improving the world’s environment for all of us.”

Luminex’s FICON and ESCON HBAs are incorporated into their Channel Gateway™, VirtualBLUE™ and Data|WARE™ product families as well as by OEMs and VARs into their mainframe servers, console consolidators and mainframe storage products. In addition to HBAs, Luminex offers a full suite of developer products to assist OEMs and developers with the design and development of ESCON and FICON connected mainframe products.

The RoHS Directive

The RoHS Directive, enacted by the European Union (EU) in February 2003 as subsequently amended, restricts the use of six hazardous substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers) within electrical and electronic equipment. The goal, consistent with other international regulations, is to contribute to human health and the environment by restricting the use of certain hazardous substances in new equipment. Manufacturers of electronics products outside of Europe must abide by this directive if the equipment they produce is ultimately imported in an EU member state. The legislation will be enforced throughout the EU beginning July 1, 2006.
