LUMINEX Announces Mainframe Data De-Duplication Solution in Production at Shoden Data Systems

Luminex Channel Gateway simplifies customer implementation of tape-less backup, cost effective remote replication and rapid recovery process

TAMPA, FL—February 12, 2007—Luminex Software, Inc., a leading developer of mainframe connectivity, channel gateway, storage and data distribution products, announced today at the SHARE Technology Exchange Expo that its customer Shoden Data Systems has installed a tape-less mainframe backup, recovery and disaster recovery replication solution for one of their premier clients, the leading retail company in the Republic of South Africa.

The mainframe solution is in production now, and is enabled by Luminex’s Channel Gateway™ 3600, which provides native FICON tape connectivity directly to the mainframe.  The Channel Gateway is non-disruptive and works with all existing mainframe backup software and applications.   Shoden has integrated industry-leading data de-duplication technology coupled with Hitachi Data Systems FC disk storage to create a tape-less backup and disaster recovery process and is enjoying the benefits of 20-to-1 backup compression resulting in greater efficiencies, increased reliability and enhanced data security.

By integrating the Channel Gateway with data de-duplication for mainframe environments, Shoden and Luminex have altered the economies of remote data replication by making it an affordable alternative to the traditional resource intensive method of creating and shipping physical tapes to a remote location.  By reducing the backup data 20x or more, the WAN bandwidth and associated costs have been drastically reduced.  The outcome was a reliable, cost effective and production-ready tape-less backup and remote replication solution in an area of the world with limited network bandwidth!  The system is in production use today and the customer is planning to expand the installation!

The results have been dramatic and will increase over time including:

  • Multiple weeks worth of backups available online for local recovery.
  • Backups generated automatically and replicated to the DR facility.
  • The need to manage physical tapes eliminated.
  • The 20-to-1 data de-duplication maximizes efficiency of available network bandwidth.
  • Data security enhanced with no exposure to lost or stolen DR tapes.
  • The disaster recovery process becomes more efficient and reliable.

“Using the Channel Gateway we were able to deliver exactly the solution our customer wanted.  We will use the Luminex solution with de-duplication and Hitachi storage to completely replace our customer’s costly and manpower intensive tape-based backup and disaster recovery process which relied on the security exposure of transporting tapes between sites.  The new Luminex-enabled solution is a far faster, more efficient, and more reliable way to implement mainframe enterprise backup and disaster recovery,” stated Mark Slade, Shoden’s Business Development Director.  “The Luminex Channel Gateway made it possible and Luminex is a great company to work with.”

“Luminex continues to lead the mainframe storage industry with customer-focused solutions," stated Michael Saunders, Luminex's President.  “Shoden is already benefiting from the capabilities that mainframe customers can enjoy by using our Channel Gateway products coupled with the “game changing” de-duplication technology.  We are committed to the rapid introduction of these types of “industry altering” solutions to the mainframe storage market.”

Luminex and Shoden will present and discuss the customer implementation at a Luminex-sponsored luncheon event open to all attendees at the SHARE User Group Meeting in Tampa, FL on Tuesday, February 13, at 12:15.
