LUMINEX Announces Comprehensive Base of Mainframe Virtual Tape Installations

Solaris-Based Channel Gateways Enable Deployment of Industry-Leading Storage Technologies Into Mainframe Data Centers

DENVER , CO – October 10, 2007 – Today, at Sun Forum 2007, Luminex announces a broad spectrum of installed mainframe virtual tape customers and configurations. Based on Luminex’s previously announced Channel Gateway product family, these installations demonstrate the rapidly growing industry acceptance and unparalleled versatility of the Channel Gateway in bringing new technologies to the mainframe base of customers.

The Channel Gateway is a Sun Solaris-based solution that delivers virtual tape emulation for the z/OS, z/VM and z/VSE mainframe operating system environments. The Channel Gateway presents NAS, Fibre Channel, iSCSI and SCSI storage solutions to the mainframe as 3480, 3490 and 3590 tape drives. Mainframe tape backup, storage management, and applications work without modification with the Channel Gateway enabled storage.

“There has been a dramatic increase in the worldwide adoption rate of the Luminex Channel Gateway virtual tape solution”, stated Art Tolsma, Luminex’s CEO. “The advancements and proven enterprise quality of NAS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, VTL and De-duplication products make these technologies very attractive to mainframe customers. The Channel Gateway is the enabling technology that opens the way for these solutions to be deployed in the mainframe data center.”

Throughout 2007, Luminex customers have demonstrated the flexibility of the Channel Gateway mainframe virtual tape with innovative implementations to meet their needs.

A leading chemical company has automated their VM tape backup system and seven unique VSE mainframe tape environments while using an existing EMC Symmetrix disk array for high-availability storage. Luminex implemented multiple Channel Gateways with Sun's QFS SAN filesystem technology to eliminate single points of failure. According to Charles Bryant, Senior Systems Programmer, "My directive was to get all operators out of the computer room so they could become part of the 'I/S Global Help Desk,' which meant eliminating all tape handling, and to free up valuable computer room floor space occupied by the 28, 3480 and 3590 tape drives.  With the unprecedented help from Luminex working with our complex host and storage requirements, we have a Channel Gateway solution which meets all of our needs. Luminex has been by far one of the best vendors I have ever worked with in my 20+ years doing Systems Programming."

A regional data center for universities has relied on the Luminex Channel Gateway solution with iSCSI based network storage to provide cost-effective local storage and remote data replication of mainframe tape data. According to the Manager of Software Support, the solution "...wildly exceeded my expectations. We were able to bring in new business based solely on the ability to provide quick, cost effective solutions to our customers.”

Based on our previously announced Sun partnership, additional customers have installed the Channel Gateway software on the Sun Fire X4500 Data Servers (aka Thumper), leveraging the advantages of Solaris 10 and the ZFS filesystem for mainframe tape batch processing. One of these customers, a state agency, upgraded their aging tape autoloader infrastructure with Luminex’s Channel Gateway software and Sun’s Fire X4500 Data Servers. The result was improved performance and reduced ongoing maintenance costs. “The Luminex Channel Gateway software combined with the Sun Fire X4500 Data Server makes a great, high-performance, cost-effective mainframe virtual tape solution, “ stated the state agency’s IT manager. He continued, “We have integrated the solution with our existing open systems tape library infrastructure for cost-effective backups without using mainframe resources.”

This announcement includes a diverse sample of customer use cases. All sites mentioned are installed now and available as customer references.
