Through the Channel Gateway, open systems physical Tape Drives (any open systems FC or SCSI tape drive - LTO III, 9840, T10000, 3592, etc.) and Tape Library products (any FC attached tape library from Sun, IBM, Overland, … with any type of open systems tape drive – LTO, 9840, 9940, T10K, 3592, TS1120 etc..) can be channel-attached to the mainframe via native ESCON and FICON. The Channel Gateway presents itself to the mainframe as native ESCON or FICON channel-attached devices (such as 3480, 3490 or 3590 tape drives). Mainframe applications and tape management software mount, dismount, read and write “tapes” through the Channel Gateway without change. ESCON and FICON traffic is streamed at wire speed to the physical Tape Drive or Tape Library with no added MIPS overhead, no bottlenecks and no impact to the mainframe.
Cost effective, fast and high capacity LTO and FC-tape drives and libraries can now be deployed for mainframe backup and disaster recovery applications. In addition tape encryption is fully supported through the use of modern open systems tape encryption appliances.
