PANASONIC AND LUMINEX TEAM UP TO DELIVER HIGH PERFORMANCE RECORDABLE DVD PUBLISHING SOLUTIONS FOR UNIX ENVIRONMENT

Background
Companies today -- from the large enterprise to the small business -- are finding that their need for storage solutions is growing much faster than their internal resources. As a result, they are looking for technology providers to address very specific business challenges quickly and painlessly with turnkey systems and minimal work power demands. Founded in 1994, Luminex is one company that consistently addresses these issues and delivers targeted, highly reliable solutions.

Since its inception, Luminex has been dedicated to developing innovative data storage products that tackle the complex challenges of storing, archiving, distributing and protecting data. With its unique line of optical-based storage solutions for the UNIX environment, Luminex is able to streamline business processes and increase ROI for data centers --large and small -- with complex storage operations. Complemented by quality customer service, Luminex's innovative products create real value for enterprises of all sizes.

Challenge
The small business niche has always been an important and successful target audience for Luminex. The company recognized early on that small businesses face the same industry demands to archive and publish critical business data, but fewer resources with which to accomplish those goals. With Luminex's new Data|WARE™ Workstation product line, small businesses can now take advantage of enterprise class data archiving and publishing capabilities for the UNIX desktop.

A critical component to the Luminex product line has been the integration of SCSI devices. When the SCSI devices were suddenly discontinued earlier this year, the company faced an interesting challenge. What would replace it? How would the company deliver the same value propositions their customers had come to expect? Luminex soon began the search for an alternative optical storage device that was fast, cost-effective and multi-purposed. Panasonic's DVD Multi Drive was an ideal fit.

Solution
In 2003, Luminex integrated Panasonic's DVD Multi Drive into their Data|WARE Workstation Combo product, which provides DVD-RAM, DVD-R and CD-R archiving and publishing with software support for Sun® Solaris, IBM® AIX®, Linux, Hewlett Packard® HP-UX and SGI® IRIX operating systems. The product's easy-to-use graphical interface guides the user through the recording process and enables anyone to record catalogs, sales presentations and product documents. The data can then be stored permanently for business contingencies or as part of regulatory compliance.

The benefits that Recordable DVD technology - specifically the combination of DVD-RAM/DVD-R - brings to the Luminex product line are a critical selling factor to the small business customer. DVD technology is heavily relied upon for its archiveability, fast recordability and volume size of 4.7GB. In addition, DVD-RAM offers users larger volume size of 9.4GB and the option of rewriteability to approximately 100,000 times. And, thanks to advanced defect management, businesses can rely on error-free recording when archiving and burning data to DVD-RAM.

With read/write support for all DVD Forum recordable DVD specifications and read/write support for CD-R/RW discs, Panasonic's DVD Multi Drive provides users with the flexibility to choose the capacity that best fits their needs. Individuals and businesses that currently use CDs for backup can migrate to higher capacity DVD media without ever having to change their hardware or software. The specifications ensure disc compatibility for all recordable DVD formats established by the 230-member DVD Forum both for consumer electronics products and personal computers. In addition to reading and writing DVD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, CD-R and CD-RW discs, the Panasonic DVD Multi Drive can also play DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio and CD-ROM discs. With this multi-recorder capability, users can replace both their CD and tape drives with a single storage solution to carry out backups on rewriteable DVD and CD media, and to create archives and system replication masters using write-once DVD and CD media.

"Long-term data archiving is becoming a critical IT issue these days and Luminex is committed to using only the best in optical technologies to address those challenges," said Art Tolsma, CEO of Luminex. "Solutions like Data|WARE Workstation with the Panasonic DVD Multi Drive provide a non-changing, reliable archiving media needed to meet obligations for retention of critical information -- and deliver higher performance than ever before. What does all this mean? In a nutshell -- ROI."

The Results
Today, Luminex is the proven leader in optical-based storage products for the UNIX environment. Leveraging the Panasonic DVD Multi Drive, Luminex has realized a lowered cost of goods, higher performance and greater availability for their customers. With Panasonic providing a critical piece of the Luminex Data|WARE Workstation product line, customers can now record business and client records onto reliable digital media without impacting staff and operations. Designed for the UNIX workstation, the product line offers individual CD-R publishing with the Data|WARE Workstation CD-R and the combination of CD-R, DVD-R and DVD-RAM publishing with the Data|WARE Workstation Combo.

What are Luminex customers seeing? Competitive pricing, spin up performance and faster drives -- all of which yield a greater ROI.

"It's been a very successful business proposition," Tolsma added. "Many companies are now leveraging the benefits of optical media to store their critical data as part of a comprehensive disaster recovery strategy. These companies are finding that DVD media is cost effective, reliable and secure. And best of all - they are easy to use."

Optical media storage meets new federal government regulations regarding the retention and protection of sensitive data. Using the Write Once, Read Many (WORM) attributes of DVD-R and CD-R media, Data|WARE Workstation Combo records and stores data permanently. It cannot be deleted, manipulated or changed.

This makes Data|WARE Workstation Combo the ideal solution for financial advisers, investors and brokerages facing compliance with SEC Rule 17a-4 mandating the retention of all customer records, correspondence and financial transactions for up to six years. For organizations in the healthcare industry, Data|WARE Workstation Combo meets the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requiring protection of all patient information when conveyed or transmitted.

In addition, Data|WARE Workstation Combo complies with strict industry standards, mastering CDs and DVDs based on the ISO-9660 standard with support for true HFS, Rockridge and Joliet extensions. Luminex takes these standards a step further with automated, behind-the-scenes integrity checks to ensure reliable production control.

As storage of key business information becomes central to industry compliance and business continuity, be confident that you have a solution that is reliable -- and that delivers the highest ROI. Explore the synergy of Panasonic and Luminex.
